Because I couldn’t read the inscrutable letter, I was clueless about the gift the magician wished to bestow upon me. Of course my lack of knowledge didn’t stop the king’s henchman, Vail, from attempting to interrogate me. Over and over, Vail asked me what I knew about the missing crystal sword, but I could tell him nothing. Still, he continued to assail me by dunking my head in a large bucket of water. After a short time, I began to sob, and I wept in between loud gasps for air.
